Even better, sweatshirts are a quick and easy sew that don’t require a lot of fabric. Shoot, you can even upcycle an old sweatshirt into something a little more your style. Win, win.
So before you get into your next DIY sweatshirt project, I wanted to give you a go to list of sweatshirt sewing patterns you can choose from. Sew House Seven Toaster Sweater
The Sew House Seven Toaster Sweater is a great pattern for a sweatshirt, particularly if you want something you can dress up a bit. The Toaster Sweater #1 is a fantastic layering piece with it’s cropped length.
I love wearing mine over winter dresses. The style is less fussy than a cardigan, and because it’s a pullover, I find it a bit warmer anyhow.

The Jalie Romy is another great choice for a sweatshirt pattern. It has loose fitting raglan sleeves and an overall relaxed fit that you want in a good sweatshirt.

The optional hood with ponytail hood and thumbhole cuffs would be great for cold weather running or other winter outdoor activities.
Because this is a more fitted sweatshirt, be sure to choose a sweatshirt knit with a higher stretch content. Something like Hermosa fleece from Rocky Woods would be a good choice.

Jalie 3355: Sweatshirt, Hoodie, and Sweat Pants
You can get a whole lot of use from Jalie 3355 which has not just a classic sweatshirt but also a hoodie and sweat pants.
With unisex style, this is a great sweatshirt pattern you can use for your whole family. Just lengthen pieces where needed.
The sweatshirt has ribbing cuffs and hems and relaxed fit sleeves (not raglan). You can pop a hood on if you’d like and add a kangaroo pocket.
I’ve yet to buy this pattern, but it’s on my list, especially for my oldest who refers to his favorite sweat pants as “Precious” he wears them so much in colder months.

The shaped hem with drawstring and fitted shoulders all combine to make for the kind of sweatshirt that’d look great with a fun pair of sneakers. I could totally see sewing up this sweatshirt in a little drapier knit for a great DIY athleisure look.

If you’re looking at the Schnittchen Ada Hoody with DIY sweatshirts on the brain, one thing is going to pop out to you immediately. This pattern is all about the sleeves.
Bold stripes on the sleeves give you a perfect opportunity to play around with different colors. It’s so cool. I really appreciate that the version with the front yoke also extends the colorblocking onto the shoulders.
Let’s be honest: it’s not always easy to figure out to colorblock on your own. If you’re new to pattern hacking, this pattern can really help you understand how to make details like this work.

The Little Lizard King Arica has a lot going for it. The cropped style with a hood will make a fabulous layering piece to pop over your clothes after a workout. There’s a women’s version as well as one for kids. So if you’re into Mommy and Me looks, this is a fun sweatshirt pattern option.

Little Lizard King also includes projector files for a no paper pattern option. I have a friend with a projector who loves how quick and easy patterns with projector files are to get cut. Hopefully more and more pattern companies will start to offer this newer pattern format.
