On your favorite kids pants pattern, fold the leg from the hem to the crotch to find the knee line.

Draw a line 2.5-3" above and below the line (bigger measurement for bigger kids).

Trace around the lines you drew plus the inseam and side seam.  This is your patch pattern.

Cut 2 knee patches from your fabric.  Mark the knee lines at the sides.

Add some fusible interfacing to the backside of your patches.  Press up 1/4" on the top and bottom of the patch.

Pin the patch to the pants leg, lining up the patches at the knee marks.

Quilt the patch in place, making rows of stitching all down the patch.

Sew the pants up according to the pattern directions to finish up.
